Quad bike crash kills teen boy and injures female passenger in Oldina, Tasmania

A teenage boy was killed and a female was severely injured when a quad bike crashed into a creek in the rural northwest of Tasmania.

Sunday, police revealed that 16-year-old male driver Tyler Evans perished in the Oldina crash on Saturday afternoon.

Kirby-Rose Denby, 16, believed to be the boy’s girlfriend, was transported to the hospital with critical injuries but was subsequently confirmed to be in stable condition.

The collision occurred on a gravel road, and it appears the quad bike failed to correctly negotiate a turn before colliding with a bridge and falling down an embankment into a creek, where the two teens were discovered.

It was early in the inquiry, he said, and authorities were giving the boy’s family time to grieve.

He said, “I can only image what the family is going through right now, and I don’t want to have this conversation with any other family if we can avoid it.”

Det Insp Steven added that police were still awaiting testimony from witnesses, although it looked that both 16-year-olds were wearing helmets.

Sunday, Ms. Denby’s condition was stable at the North West Regional Hospital in Burnie.

This is the 48th traffic fatality in the state this year, 20 more than at the same stage in 2021.

Det. Insp. Steven stated that parents must set a good example for their children by driving safely, adding that quad bikes and motorcycles pose additional dangers.

It is possible, he said.

The police will provide the coroner with a report.
