Provisional Bafana Bafana squad for the 2024 AFCON

On Tuesday, the coach of the South African national football team, Bafana Bafana, Hugo Broos, announced a preliminary squad of 35 players for the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Liberia.

The matches will take place later this month, with the first game at Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg on March 24th, followed by an away game in Monrovia on March 28th.

The squad will be trimmed down to 23 players before the matches.

The selection of just one player from the Kaizer Chiefs, goalkeeper Brandon Petersen, is a source of concern for Chiefs fans.

It suggests that the team’s progress and success this season has been limited, although injuries to some players may have been a factor.

The South African team will begin training on March 19th in Johannesburg, ahead of the two crucial matches.

The 35-member squad features goalkeepers Ronwen Williams, Brandon Petersen, Ricardo Goss, and Veli Mothwa, defenders Sydney Mobbie, Siyanda Msani, Innocent Maela, Khuliso Mudau, Taariq Fielies, Nkosinathi Sibisi, Aubrey Modiba, Grant Kekana, Thapelo Morena, Mothobi Mvala, Thapelo Maseko, and Siyanda Xulu, midfielders Miguel Timm, Luke Le Roux, Njabulo Blom, Sphephelo Sithole, Sphelele Mkhulise, Grant Magerman, and Teboho Mokoena, and forwards Monnapule Saleng, Khanyisa Mayo, Themba Zwane, Cassius Mailula, Zakhele Lepasa, Fagrie Lakay, Bongokuhle Hlongwane, Percy Tau, Lyle Foster, and Kobamelo Kodisang. Percy Tau’s inclusion is notable, as he returns to the national team.
