On the opening day of the 2023 academic year, five schools in the Welbedacht township near Zeerust in the Ngaka Modiri Molema region in North West were disrupted by community protests.

On Wednesday, January 11, 2023, five interior provinces began the new school year.

According to the North West Department of Education, a group allegedly disrupted classes at Ngotoane Secondary, Messega Primary, Babuseng Primary, RB Dithupe Primary, and DP Moloto Special School while protesting water shortages in the area.

On Tuesday, January 10, it was stated that a group of individuals intimidated instructors at school. Wednesday was a particularly disruptive day, with students being compelled to leave class at numerous schools.

Education MEC for the North West, Viola Motsumi, condemned school disturbance in the strongest possible terms.

Motsumi stated that she need assistance to comprehend how adults may enter a school and prevent students from gaining an education.

“Students are the future of this nation, and they should have access to education. This country’s Constitution emphasizes that every child has the right to an education. Those responsible for this disturbance are obviously breaching the right to education,” she stated.

In addition, Motsumi asked law enforcement agencies to take action against perpetrators and for the law to take its course against those who violate the Constitution.
