Dewald Brevis is already a household name in local cricket circles, and South African cricket fans are unanimously delighted about the prospect of the 19-year-old superstar.
Brevis has already began playing T20 cricket around the world, including for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL and MI Cape Town in the SA20, after dominating the U19 international cricket circuit.
Although he is still a teenager, many believe that the Proteas should expose him to the senior national setup as soon as possible. And this now appears to be in the near future.
As the two new Proteas coaches were introduced on Monday, South Africa’s Director of Cricket Enoch Nkwe noted, “There’s a lot of noise around Brevis.”
“We are aware of how talented he is. He demonstrated this in SA20, where he played some excellent cricket, and in T20 cricket, where he has been very consistent. In terms of youth, we may have to adopt a David-Warner-style approach in the future, where there will be a transition phase from under-19 cricket to professional cricket via T20, then ODI, and finally Test cricket. This is something we anticipate occurring in the future.”
Brevis scored 162 runs off 57 balls in a domestic T20 tournament in October, but there have been indications that there are elements of his game that, naturally, require improvement, particularly in terms of his readiness for the longer format of the game.
“We recognize that someone like Brevis has a significant amount of cricket to play, and now we must determine how to transition him to the longer format. We know he has a lot to give the South African cricket team,” Nkwe remarked.
“Both coaches are firm believers in mentoring the younger generation and not simply throwing them into the fire,” he remarked. “It is important to have a very clear, detailed plan of how each identified individual will fit into the Proteas organization.”
