The son of slain underworld figure Mark ‘Chopper’ Read has been charged with firearm, drug, and driving offenses, including illegal possession of weapons.
Charles Vincent Read, age 23, was remanded in custody after a brief appearance in the Hobart Magistrates Court on Friday morning.
Wednesday night, police say he was at the wheel of a white Toyota Corolla observed driving recklessly in New Norfolk, north of Hobart.
The vehicle was stopped with tire spikes south of New Norfolk; it was later discovered abandoned in a cemetery.
According to police, Read was located in the neighborhood
A search of the vehicle revealed ammunition and a’relatively substantial’ amount of methylamphetamine, according to the police.
Read has been charged with aggravated evasion, reckless driving, theft, possession of a loaded firearm, and various guns and narcotics offenses.
It is alleged that he possessed an unregistered Norica.22 caliber rifle, an unregistered British Savage Arms Lee Enfield bolt action rifle, and a replica Glock pistol.
The defendant has not entered a plea and is scheduled to appear in court again in mid-March.
Mark ‘Chopper’ Read, whose life and time in jail were the subject of a 2000 film, passed away in 2013.
