A previously vacant site near Blackpill in Swansea, where Lidl had originally planned to build a supermarket, could see the development of a new petrol station and food outlet.
The owner of the site on Mumbles Road has submitted a pre-application enquiry to Swansea Council, revealing plans for a Shell garage, electric vehicle charging points, and a drive-through food unit.
History of the Site and Return of a Filling Station
The site was home to the Halfway Garage for many years until its closure in 2017.
Subsequently, the site was cleared, and the underground tanks were removed.
The proposed development would mark the potential return of a filling station to this location.
Previous Lidl Supermarket Plans and Concerns
Lidl had shown interest in building a supermarket on the site two years ago, which would have required the removal of a pair of semi-detached houses on the east side.
However, the proposed development faced challenges, with concerns about the layout being cramped, the need for more parking spaces than indicated, and the requirement for Lidl to demonstrate how the out-of-town scheme addresses an unmet need.

Residents, including Andrew Morgan from Mumbles Road, expressed their objections to the proposed Lidl supermarket at a public meeting.
Concerns centered around the suitability of the location and potential over-development.
Despite Lidl’s assertion that the area lacked sufficient discount food stores, objections numbered 171, with 56 expressions of support.
Lidl’s Withdrawal and Council Response
Lidl eventually withdrew its plans three months ago, citing delays in the planning process and issues with the landowner’s arrangement.
The council refuted any delays on its part and stated that Lidl had not provided the necessary supporting documents despite repeated requests.

Supporters of the supermarket plan highlighted its potential to reduce car journeys to Swansea city centre, providing a useful resource for local residents.
