Following the passing of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, the Prime Minister talked with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida this morning to offer his condolences.

The assassination of Shinzo Abe, according to the Prime Minister, was a horrific act of needless violence. He emphasised Shinzo Abe’s contribution to laying the groundwork for the superb UK-Japan relationship and proclaimed him to be a true friend of the UK.

The Prime Minister also praised Prime Minister Kishida for advancing UK-Japan relations by building on Shinzo Abe’s foundation. Prime Minister Kishida praised the leadership of the Prime Minister in promoting freedom in the Indo-Pacific, opposing Russia’s atrocities in Ukraine, and encouraging trade between the UK and Japan.

As we embark on projects like the Future Combat Air System, join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, and advance our bilateral cooperation, the Prime Minister expressed his confidence that the UK will continue to be a steadfast international partner to Japan.
