Powerful winter storm in California threatens floods, blizzards and avalanches

California is currently facing a fierce winter storm that is bringing a mix of frigid temperatures, heavy snowfall, and potential flash flooding, blizzards, and avalanches.

Some areas may experience overnight lows below freezing, with downtown San Francisco expecting record-breaking cold temperatures on Saturday morning.

Flash flood warnings have been issued for Los Angeles and Ventura counties, and the region’s large homeless population is at special risk. The National Weather Service has warned of potential power outages, with over 100,000 homes and businesses in northern California already without power.

The storm has caused hundreds of canceled flights and shutdown miles of major highways in several states. At least three people have died in the coast-to-coast storms, and the Canadian capital of Ottawa’s world’s largest natural ice skating rink is not opening this season for the first time due to a lack of ice, blaming climate change.
