Divers have retrieved the body of a man from a popular Melbourne river after a horrified lunchtime walker made the grisly find.

Thursday at 12.30 p.m., emergency services were dispatched to Coburg Lake in the city’s north.

During a walk across the preserve, a walker spotted the horrifying discovery and alerted the authorities.

The unidentified man’s body was recovered from the lake by search and rescue divers while the area was cordoned off by law enforcement.

Victoria Police spokesman said, “Police are seeking to identify the individual and will await the findings of a post mortem to determine the circumstances surrounding his death.”

The body was placed in a bag and taken from the scene.

Coburg Lake Reserve, which encompasses the waterway, is a popular location for picnics and strolls.
