Police apprehend runaway couple

An aristocrat and her partner, Constance Marten and Mark Gordon, respectively, have been apprehended after 54 days on the run with their newborn baby. The couple vanished on January 5, 2023, after Marten gave birth to the child, and their car was found on fire on the motorway. Greater Manchester Police discovered Marten’s passport, blood, and placenta in the burned-out car, leading them to believe that she had given birth secretly two days previously.

The police search for the pair has sparked controversy over why the authorities were so keen to locate the parents and their baby. However, officers have since revealed that the newborn is still missing, and hundreds of police staff are scouring areas near where they were arrested in Brighton. Questions are being raised about how the couple managed to evade the authorities for nearly two months.

On January 6, Marten and Gordon traveled on foot to the Anchor Lane bridge, which connects the Highfield and Little Hulton areas near the motorway, before heading to Liverpool and then Harwich via a taxi at around 3.30am. Over 18 hours after the burnt-out car was discovered, Greater Manchester Police released a public appeal at 12.49pm to locate the couple. Head of Public Protection Chief Superintendent Michaela Kerr made a direct appeal to Marten to ensure the safety of the newborn.

The police disclosed that Martens, Gordon, and the baby were seen in Colchester on January 7, and CCTV footage showed Marten wrapped in a red scarf outside Harwich Port around 9 am. Essex Police began coordinating with officers in Greater Manchester as the search entered its third day.
