Less than 24 hours after a group of gunmen opened fire on Witbank Flying Squad members on Saturday, 21 January 2023, police have apprehended one suspect.

On Sunday, January 22, 2023, the suspect was apprehended as police officers were doing crime prevention operations near the Barberton Mediclinic.

After seven shooters opened fire on members of the Flying Squad in Witbank, police detained a suspect.

The cops halted the pickup truck, but the driver refused to comply and continued driving. The police then followed the car.

They could observe that the car included occupants. The police tracked the strange vehicle until it stopped on Sheba Road.
Unexpectedly, gunshots were fired from the Hyundai, and the police were forced to return fire, causing some of the occupants to abandon the vehicle and flee on foot.

Police checked the vehicle and discovered Gauteng license plates, an empty magazine, and a spent cartridge box, according to the police.

Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, provincial commissioner of Mpumalanga, complimented the members for their gallantry in apprehending the suspect.

Two members of the Witbank Flying Squad on normal patrol assisted a driver who had broken down.

While the members were still assisting, an opposing motorist stopped to assist. As the officers approached this car, they saw that the road had been obstructed by boulders.

As the members removed the rocks in the middle of the night, seven fully armed suspects appeared from the dense black bushes and fired multiple bullets at the members, prompting police officers to return fire.

Former police officer sentenced to 25 years in prison for murder.

During that unjustified attack, one of the members was shot in the abdomen.

He was rushed to the hospital, where he is currently recuperating.
