On Thursday, Poland’s President Andrzej Duda announced that his country is planning to give Ukraine around a dozen MiG-29 fighter jets, making it the first NATO member to fulfil the Ukrainian government’s requests for warplanes.
Poland has been one of Ukraine’s strongest supporters and has played a leading role in convincing other hesitant allies to provide Kyiv with heavy weaponry.
President Duda stated that any transfer of jets would be as part of a coalition.
President Duda revealed that Poland would give four of the Soviet-made warplanes to Ukraine in the next few days, while the remaining jets required servicing and would be supplied later.
The Polish word he used to describe the total number of jets can mean between 11 and 19.
During a news conference, President Duda confirmed that the transfer of the jets would take place soon.
He said, “Firstly, literally within the next few days, we will hand over, as far as I remember, four aircraft to Ukraine in full working order. The rest are being prepared, serviced.”
With this transfer, Ukraine will receive the much-needed military assistance to support its ongoing battle against pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine.
