Poland to give fighter jets to Ukraine with hopes for UK Typhoon replacement

Poland has promised to supply Ukraine with fighter jets in the coming weeks, and has suggested that NATO allies, including the UK, provide surplus aircraft to take their place.

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki indicated that the provision of MiG-29s, which are already part of Ukraine’s air force, would take place in four to six weeks.

While the move will be a major boost for Ukraine, learning to operate unfamiliar British and US jets could take many months.

The UK is due to withdraw up to 30 Typhoon jets from service in 2025, and Defence Secretary Ben Wallace has said he is willing to send them to eastern European countries, backfilling their contributions to Ukraine’s fighter jet fleet.

Slovakia may also send its MiG-29s as part of the arrangement. Poland has already sent 14 German-made Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine and indicated that it would send fewer MiG-29s.

After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Poland made the same pledge to donate fighter jets to Ukraine, but the US blocked the plan over fears it could escalate the conflict.

However, a year later, the US is said to support such an initiative. It remains unclear why the provision of MiG-29s from various eastern European NATO members to Ukraine has not already happened, if this is the case.
