The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP) have demanded that President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima publicly disclose their assets as a demonstration of their commitment to leading by example.
While the PDP emphasizes the need for the leaders to go beyond fulfilling legal requirements, the LP suggests giving Tinubu some time to make his assets public, acknowledging that it is a statutory obligation.
The PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, stressed that merely filling out asset declaration forms for the Code of Conduct Bureau is insufficient.
He urged President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima to emulate the late President Umaru Musa Yar’ Adua, who publicly declared his financial and material worth, demonstrating a commitment to transparent and accountable leadership.
Ologunagba emphasized that such leadership traits are expected at the highest levels of government.
LP’s Perspective:
Contrary to the PDP’s stance, the LP’s National Chairman, Julius Abure, suggested giving President Tinubu some time to declare his assets publicly.
While acknowledging the legal requirement for asset declaration, Abure expressed his opinion that Tinubu should fulfill this obligation openly.
He also raised concerns about the challenge of accurately remembering all acquired assets, given Tinubu’s status as a wealthy individual who has served as a senator and a two-term governor.
Rejection of Public Declaration:
Festus Keyamo, former Minister of State for Labour and Employment and spokesman for the dissolved APC Presidential Campaign Council, rejected the demand for President Tinubu to publicly declare his assets.
Keyamo highlighted that public declaration of assets is not legally required, clarifying that it is a matter of personal choice.
He emphasized that individuals should decide whether or not to fulfill this moral obligation.
