Patrick Reed joins Saudi-funded LIV Golf Invitational Series

Along the PGA Tour veteran Pat Perez, the former Masters champion was named as the breakaway tour’s newest signing on Saturday.

Reed, the world No. 36, will compete in LIV Golf’s second event in Portland, Oregon later this month alongside Bryson De Chambeau, Phil Mickelson, and Lee Westwood.

The PGA Tour suspended its players competing in the tour’s debut tournament, held at the Centurion Club in St Albans, where about £20 million in prize money was on the line, earlier this week, and warned that the’same fate remains true’ for stars competing in future Saudi events.

‘I’m really excited,’ Reed said of his new partnership with LIV Golf. For me, the prospect of becoming a part of an evolution and a shift in golf for the better is incredible.

‘I’ve been watching all weekend, and I’m very excited and can’t wait to be a part of it because of the structure and the way everything is going.’

‘It’s great to see team golf back.’ It transports you back to your college days and the Ryder Cups and Presidents Cups, where you’re competing not only for yourself but also for your team.

‘I’ve been talking to some of the guys after the first and second rounds and they told me how well the tournament is run and the turnout with the fans, the energy and excitement that they have.

‘Every player seems so pumped and ready to go and Portland can’t get here fast enough.’

The new tour’s CEO Greg Norman has now lured five former Masters champions with Reed joining Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Sergio Garcia and Charl Schwartzel at LIV Golf.

Norman, who reportedly offered Tiger Woods $1billion to cross golf’s divide, was delighted after securing Reed and boasted of his series’ growing strength.

He said: ‘The growing roster of LIV Golf players gets even stronger today with a player of Patrick Reed’s calibre. He has a proven track record as one of the most consistent competitors in pro golf and adds yet another big presence at our tournaments.
