One killed; 4 others wounded in stabbing attack Saturday afternoon on a Wisconsin river

A Saturday afternoon stabbing incident on a Wisconsin river close to the Minnesota border resulted in the death of a 17-year-old kid and the injuries of four other people. A suspect was taken into custody.

According to CBS Minnesota, the attack was reported on the Apple River near the Wisconsin hamlet of Somerset at around 3:45 p.m.

Sheriff Scott Knudson of St. Croix County stated at a news conference that officers were sent to the Apple River to uncover five victims with knife wounds.

According to Knudson, a Minnesotan lad, 17, passed away from his injuries. His identity was not immediately made public.

Four other people, a lady and three males, all thought to be in their early 20s, were sent to nearby hospitals, according to Knudson. Their health status was unknown.

A 52-year-old Minnesota man was found and taken into custody approximately 90 minutes after the incident, according to Knudson, when a witness at the scene took a picture of the suspect. The knife used in the stabbings, however, was not in his possession when he was taken into custody, and Knudson affirmed that detectives are still looking for it.

“We believe that is the sole person of our investigation, but again this is a very fluid investigation, that could change, but we believe it is one suspect, one subject,” Knudson said.

It is unknown what sparked the attack. According to Knudson, the victims were tubing with one group while the suspect was tubing with a group of six to eight people.

“They were all tubing, and appeared to be simultaneously going down with those two groups,” Knudson said.

According to Knudson, the suspect, whose identity was withheld, has been taken into custody at the St. Croix County Jail and may be charged as soon as Monday.
