Ohanaeze Ndigbo Ready to Meet with Incoming President Tinubu Regarding Nnamdi Kanu’s Detention

The apex Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has expressed its willingness to hold a meeting with the incoming President, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to discuss the ongoing detention of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Nnamdi Kanu has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since his rearrest in Kenya in June 2021.

He is currently facing charges of treasonable felony and terrorism filed against him by the Federal Government.

In an interview with The PUNCH, Alex Ogbonnia, the spokesperson for Ohanaeze Ndigbo, expressed disappointment at President Muhammadu Buhari’s failure to release Nnamdi Kanu despite numerous pleas from various stakeholders.

Ogbonnia further shared the sentiments of Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, who had stated that releasing Kanu would be a significant gesture from Buhari as he concludes his tenure.

Ogbonnia expressed sadness and questioned why President Buhari had not heeded their appeals, mentioning that this was also the last wish of the late President-General, Prof George Obiozor.

When asked if Ohanaeze Ndigbo would meet with Tinubu after his inauguration, Ogbonnia confirmed that they would, emphasizing that the government and its institutions would persist.

He stressed that the struggle would continue, and they would keep appealing to the authorities to understand their concerns.

He also speculated that there was a possibility that President Buhari might release Kanu on the day of his final speech.
