A faction of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo socio-cultural organization has expressed its disagreement with the call made by former militant leader Asari Dokubo, urging the presidency not to release Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), from the custody of the Department of State Service (DSS).

Detrimental Impact on Southeast Economy:

The faction’s Secretary-General, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, lamented that the continuous detention of Kanu was causing destabilization and adversely affecting the economy of the Southeast region.

Previous Support for Dokubo:

Isiguzoro highlighted that in the past, when the Nigerian Government declared Asari Dokubo wanted, it was an Ohanaeze member, Uche Okwukwu, who provided him with shelter.

This historical support demonstrated their willingness to assist individuals facing similar circumstances.

Reasons for Advocating Kanu’s Release:

The faction clarified that their call for Kanu’s release was not intended to help him evade the law.

Instead, they were concerned about the negative repercussions of his continued incarceration on the Southeast region.

Appeal for National Unity:

Isiguzoro appealed to the President, urging him to release Kanu in the interest of national unity.

The faction believed that releasing Kanu and other prisoners of conscience, including Henry Okah, the IPOB leader, through a presidential pardon would contribute to the country’s healing and reconciliation.

Addressing Dokubo’s Concerns:

The faction acknowledged the history of disagreements between Dokubo and Kanu, particularly regarding the training of IPOB members.

They emphasized that these conflicts should not hinder efforts to unite the country and promote peace.

Potential Consequences of Kanu’s Detention:

Isiguzoro expressed concern that criminals might exploit Kanu’s continued incarceration to cause havoc, thereby exacerbating the already precarious situation in the country.

Conclusion:

The faction of Ohanaeze Ndigbo reiterated their stance on Kanu’s release, emphasizing the adverse impact of his prolonged detention on the economy and security of the Southeast.

They called for unity and appealed to President Bola Tinubu to grant a presidential pardon to all prisoners of conscience, including Kanu and Henry Okah, as a step towards fostering national reconciliation in a divided Nigeria.
