Ogun Speaker’s Fate Hangs in Balance as INEC Conducts Supplementary Election Today

…Researched and contributed by Solomon Thomas.

Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Olakunle Oluomo, will today find out if he will be a candidate in the 2023 election for the fourth time to represent Ifo Constituency 1 under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The election, which initially took place on March 18, was closely contested between Oluomo and the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Okikiola Ogundele, who is the son of the PDP Chairman in Ogun, Sikirulahi Ogundele.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared the Ifo Constituency 1 election inconclusive because the margin of lead was not up to the number of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) collected in a polling unit where the election was cancelled.

INEC announced the cancellation of the result in Unit 04 of Ifo Ward 01 due to over-voting.

INEC declared that the election in Unit 04 of Ifo Ward 1 would be held today to conclude the process and declare a winner.

The electoral umpire, while declaring the election inconclusive, said the APC had scored 7,379 votes, while the PDP polled 6,411 votes.

It is expected that 1,596 people will take part in today’s election, and the margin of lead is 968.

Oluomo is hoping to secure the APC nomination for the fourth time and continue representing Ifo Constituency 1.
