Nurses recognized as heroes for saving new born baby during earthquake

GAZIANTEP, Turkey – Last week, security cameras captured incredible footage of hospital employees in Gaziantep, Turkey, rushing to save newborns, children, and other people as the ground violently shook during a terrible and catastrophic earthquake.

The video footage, which was published by Turkish Health Minister Dr. Fahrettin Koca, depicts two nurses frantically holding onto incubators to keep them from toppling or sliding across the floor during the opening seconds of the first strong earthquake.

The second segment of the film depicts medical workers evacuating more children and others from the facility by fleeing through the hospital’s hallways.

Koca stated, “Our friends at the Gaziantep Inayet Topcuoglu Hospital sacrificed their life to save our sick children during the earthquake.” There are numerous instances of this in different hospitals. Our people who fled immediately to the earthquake-affected provinces did the same thing.”

Tens of thousands of people are struggling to remain warm in cramped tents or on the streets as the search for survivors of last week’s series of deadly and catastrophic earthquakes that struck Turkey and Syria winds down.

The Associated Press reports that more than 35,000 people were killed by the earthquakes. The death toll now exceeds that of Japan’s 2011 earthquake and tsunami, which claimed slightly over 18,000 lives.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, millions of people were jolted awake when a magnitude 7.8 earthquake rocked the region at 8:17 p.m. EDT on Sunday, followed nearly immediately by a strong 6.7 magnitude aftershock.

After nine hours, the region experienced another strong aftershock with a magnitude of 7.5 — only one of hundreds of aftershocks of varied magnitudes that continued to shake the region for days.

The initial 7.8 magnitude earthquake that occurred on Monday had a depth of 11 miles and was likely felt as far away as Beirut in Lebanon and Cairo in Egypt, according to USGS data.

The region where the earthquake occurred is regarded as seismically active. Since 1970, just three earthquakes of magnitude 6 or more have occurred within 150 miles of the epicenter, according to the USGS.

In 1999, the AP reported that over 18,000 people were killed by severe earthquakes that struck the northwestern region of Turkey.
