Nurse is fired over slamming two-day-old newborn face-down into a bassinet

A nurse who was recently hired at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip, Long Island, was fired after a father recorded her slamming his two-day-old newborn son face-down into a bassinet at the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

The baby, named Nikko, was under NICU care and receiving antibiotics at the time of the attack.

Nikko’s father, Fidel Sinclair, witnessed the incident while taking a video of his crying baby through the nursery window.

When the mother, Consuelo Saravia, confronted the nurse, she denied mishandling the baby but was fired after the incident was reported to other nurses and administrators.

The hospital spokesperson confirmed that swift and immediate action was taken, including an investigation, and that the nurse was terminated.

The hospital also reported the individual to the Department of Health for further review.

The family noted that the NICU room had no security cameras and many curtains were closed, prompting concerns about the safety of other babies.

The New York State Department of Health is investigating the matter.

Fortunately, baby Nikko is now home and doing well.
