California residents prepare for flash floods as rain keeps falling

A strong winter storm is currently pounding California, posing the threat of floods, blizzards, and avalanches. The National Weather Service has issued flash flood warnings in Los Angeles and Ventura counties, where up to 7 inches of rain has fallen and up to 10 inches could be possible. Many highways have been closed, and nearly 2 feet of new snow has fallen in the Sierra Nevada backcountry. The heavy snowfall has led to an avalanche warning in the region around Lake Tahoe. Additionally, frigid temperatures are expected, with downtown San Francisco projected to hit its coldest temperature since 2009. Power outages are possible, and around 100,000 homes and businesses in the northern part of California were already without power as of Saturday morning. The weather has also caused hundreds of flight cancellations and shuttered miles of major highways. While southern states have largely avoided the cold, parts of the upper Midwest to the Northeast are expected to experience snow and pockets of freezing rain. At least three people have died due to the storms, and many are at risk, particularly California’s large homeless population.
