NSRI warns of full moon spring tide

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) has issued a warning to beachgoers about the full moon spring tidal from Monday, January 2, 2023 to Friday, January 6, 2023.

FULL MOON SPRING TIDE
Coastal bathers and fishers will observe that the high tide will progressively increase above usual levels.

The low tide will steadily fall below usual as the full moon approaches.

On January 6, there will be a tiny full moon.

There are concerns that bathers and fisherman along the coast will be caught off guard by the spring full moon tides.

In some locations, rip currents might be stronger around spring tides. The NSRI urges coastal swimmers and anglers to exercise caution.

Bathers should only swim between the red and yellow flags denoting safe swimming areas on beaches with lifeguards.

WHAT IS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE FULL MOON AND DIFFERENT WINDS?

Although both the moon and the sun affect ocean currents, the moon exerts the most effect.

Although the sun’s gravitational pull on Earth is 178 times stronger than the moon’s, the sun’s tidal bulges are far smaller.

Even though the sun is significantly farther from the planet than the moon, its immense mass exerts a gravitational pull on the ocean currents of the globe.

The combined effects of the sun and moon are dictated by the moon’s phase, or its position in relation to the sun and the earth.

During the new or full moon, the sun, moon, and Earth form a straight line. As a result, a spring tide occurs.
