North Korean Parents risk prison sentence if children are allowed to watch Hollywood

North Korean officials have warned that parents who allow their children to watch Hollywood movies will be sent to prison camps as part of a crackdown on Western media in the country.

While in the past, parents may have received only a warning if their children were caught with foreign media, the government has now escalated its efforts to eliminate all illicit overseas films from the country.

Neighbourhood watch meetings, known as Inminban, are being set up to inform parents that severe punishment will be imposed on anyone who allows their children to be exposed to Western content.

According to reports, parents found to have children watching foreign films or TV programmes will be sent to a labour camp for six months, while their children will have to serve five years.

Those who talk, dance or sing like South Koreans will also face similar punishment.

The North Korean regime is wary of the influence of foreign media on younger generations and sees the eradication of imported media as a way of maintaining control over the population.

The penalties for distributing smuggled videos can include a death sentence.

Last year, two teenagers were shot for watching and selling movies from South Korea, while a third boy was executed for murdering his stepmother.
