Kyrgios defeated defending US Open champion Danii Medvedev 7-6 (13-11), 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the round of 16 to reach the New York quarterfinals for the first time ever.

After the loss, Medvedev, 26, would lose his position as World No. 1, while Kyrgios will return to the top 20 for the first time since February 2020.
Kyrgios stated, “It was a phenomenal match.”
“Daniil is the defending champion and is under a great deal of pressure, but I’ve been playing quite well recently.
“People began to seriously question my ability to win such matches at majors. It has not been easy to deal with all of the criticism, therefore I am really proud of myself.”

Kyrgios is in the top form of his career right now.
The 27-year-old, known for his fiery temper on the court, placed second at Wimbledon in July before capturing the Citi Open men’s singles title last month.
Since March, he has risen more than 100 positions in the ATP rankings due to his recent run of play.
“I really feel like I’m playing for a lot more than myself,” he remarked after beating Medvedev. I have a great deal of inspiration in the back of my head.
Kyrgios faces the 27th-seeded Russian Karen Khachanov in the last eight of the US Open on Tuesday.
