The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) is urging for more vigilance in light of the growing number of measles cases as hundreds of thousands of students returned to school on Wednesday to begin the 2023 academic year.

The NICD stated in a statement on Thursday that a total of 357 measles cases with laboratory confirmation had been recorded in five provinces. The afflicted provinces include Limpopo (140 instances), Mpumalanga (75), the North West (114), Gauteng (16), and the Free State (12 cases), which have all been recorded.

The age range of the laboratory-confirmed cases in the five provinces, according to the NICD, is two months to 42 years old.

The bulk of instances, 146, occurred in people aged 5 to 9 years, followed by 105 people aged 1-4 years and 57 people aged 10 to 14 years, according to the NICD.

Vaccination status for 71 of the 357 cases in the provinces where the measles epidemic has been proclaimed was known, and 28 of those patients had received vaccinations.
