Police have launched a massive manhunt after a highway patrol officer was allegedly killed by a stolen vehicle while attempting to stop it with road spikes.

On Christmas Day at approximately 9:10 a.m., police saw the Volkswagen on Deane Street in Narara, north of Gosford on the NSW Central Coast.

Other guys, presumed to be automobile passengers, were arrested at the scene and led away in handcuffs, some shirtless and wearing shorts.

The driver allegedly targeted the cop laying down the tyre spikes and struck him before abandoning the vehicle and his companions before vanishing into the surrounding forest.

Several additional guys, believed to be passengers in the vehicle, were apprehended at the scene and hauled away in handcuffs, one shirtless and wearing shorts, according to witnesses.

The injured traffic cop was evacuated in stable condition to Royal North Shore Hospital.

“We hope he’s alright,” they said.

Monday afternoon was spent searching for the fugitive driver.

A NSW Police spokesman told Daily Mail Australia, “A police operation is ongoing on Deane Street after the driver abandoned the vehicle and escaped into surrounding forest.”
