After being drawn against each other on Monday evening, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns will lead the MTN 8 semifinals with a tantalizing matchup.
After an intense weekend of cup play, four of the eight teams that had qualified for the event advanced to the second round, with the Buccaneers securing their berth by defeating Royal AM 2-1 on the road on Saturday.
This resulted in a two-legged matchup against the defending champions, with the first leg scheduled to take place at Orlando Stadium and the second leg at Loftus Versveld.
It will be a battle between the two most recent champions of the competition, as Pirates look to reclaim the trophy they last won in December 2020, following an impressive cup run in which they defeated Cape Town City, Kaizer Chiefs, and Bloemfontein Celtic, who they defeated in the final at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
The Brazilians, on the other hand, were victorious last year, defeating City in the championship game after advancing past Chiefs and Golden Arrows. Saturday’s 2-0 home victory over Tshwane rivals SuperSport United clinched their position in the 2022 semifinals.
The first leg of the semifinals has been scheduled for the first weekend of October, with the second leg scheduled for the 22nd weekend of the same month.
