Mother on hot seat after revealing she asked a man in wheelchair to move

A mother sparked backlash online after asking a man in a wheelchair to move so she could sit next to her five-year-old daughter on the bus. The 32-year-old woman posted on the ‘Am I the A**hole’ Reddit group, explaining that her daughter needed to sit next to her for ‘safety reasons’, but the wheelchair-bound man refused because he needed space for his chair. The mother was frustrated by the man’s response, asking the online group to decide who was in the wrong.

However, the overwhelming majority of the members deemed she was at fault, with more than 2,500 people weighing in. The mother expressed her frustration caused by the man not giving up his spot and having to stand for the entire ride with her daughter, which was uncomfortable and tiring for both of them. When she shared the story with friends, they accused her of being ‘insensitive and ableist.’

The comments prompted the woman to pose the ‘Am I the Ahole’ question to Reddit, and the now-locked board took her friends’ side. One Reddit user sarcastically wrote: ‘I’m so sorry your legs were tired from standing. Must be hard when the person in the wheelchair can sit the whole time.’ Like many others, the user passed the verdict, ‘YTA,’ meaning ‘You’re the ahole.’ Another Reddit user suggested the simple solution that the mother and daughter just share the one open seat.

However, another user weighed in on the negative lesson the child was learning from her mother’s actions, pointing out the potential of this child becoming just as much of an a**hole as their mother. Another Reddit user chimed in as a bus driver, explaining that the wheelchair-bound man likely had his mobility device hooked up to the bus so it wouldn’t slide around. They wrote that in order for him to move his chair, someone would’ve had to unhook his chair for him to let the entitled mother sit down. One user echoed many on the board and said the mother should have accepted that she needed to stay standing. ‘The child sits and you stand. Simple. YTA,’ they wrote.
