A nurse who generated outrage by proclaiming on live national television, “If you voted Conservative, you don’t deserve to be resuscitated by the NHS,” claimed today that her problem is that she “cares too much.”
Miranda Hughes, 46, a former NHS nurse, made the inflammatory statements against the healthcare system during a live Channel 5 television debate on Monday.
The offensive remarks provoked an outcry on social media, with Twitter users urging she be fired for her ‘disgusting’ remark.
Others demanded that the Nursing and Midwifery Council, the national nursing authority, investigate Ms. Hughes, a former NHS nurse who now works in the private sector and resides in Hampshire.
Ms. Hughes, who criticized Brexit as “absurd” and “embarrassing” in a prior broadcast appearance, believes she now faces termination for violating her company’s media policy.
She has placed the finger of blame at the ‘Twitterati,’ who she claims have “gone to town” on her since the live broadcast.
She claims she “lost her temper” prior to the remarks, which she now acknowledges were “inappropriate.”
She told the Daily Telegraph, “Now I am likely to lose my job because the Twitterati have gone to town.”

She currently works for a private healthcare and rehabilitation service in south London.
When asked by the Telegraph if she risked termination, she responded, “I have dragged the company into disrepute, so yes, I will be fired.”
In 2020, Mrs. Hughes retired from a frontline nursing position. She worked as a trainer for the Hampshire Hospitals NHS Trust, but according to the trust, she is no longer affiliated with them.
Ms. Hughes made these remarks as she discussed her decision to leave the NHS for the private sector with host Jeremy Vine.
She stated, “I could not manage the emotional strain of being unable to help my patients.”

As her wrath grew, she continued: ‘And you hear again on the television that care facilities are being ring-fenced, but it’s a lie.’
“Unfortunately, if you voted for the Conservative Party, you do not deserve to be revived by the NHS.
“I understand it was harsh, I understand that was cruel, but looking at these gentlemen has made me so upset.
When asked by broadcaster Jeremy Vine if she meant what she said, she responded, “No, of course I would, of course I would.”
But the manner in which we have been treated is abhorrent. Every nurse has received a slap in the face.
Today, her remarks have provoked an internet reaction, with individuals labeling her views as “bigotry.”
In the meantime, a person who knows Ms. Hughes told MailOnline that she may have let her emotions to get the best of her.
