Minister Steve Baker apologized to Irish parliamentarians during the Queen’s burial

Today, he revealed that a top official used the state burial of the Queen to apologize to Irish lawmakers for how the UK handled Brexit.

Steve Baker told the Conservative Party Conference he said sorry to Dublin politicians for a lack of 'respect' during the years of talks, when they were in London last month.

Mr. Baker, a minister for Northern Ireland, is a staunch Leave supporter who resigned in 2018 in protest of Theresa May’s Brexit plan.

He spent the remainder of the lengthy period preceding the UK’s exit from the EU as a prominent critic on the opposition benches.

Today, he told a conference in Birmingham that relations with Ireland are not where they should be.Minister Steve Baker apologized to Irish parliamentarians during the Queen’s burial

‘It is with humility that I accept and acknowledge that I and others did not always act in a manner that encouraged Ireland and the European Union to trust us to accept that they have legitimate interests – legitimate interests that we are willing to accept, because they do and we are willing to accept them,’ he said.

And I’m sorry for that, because relations with Ireland are not where they should be, and I know we’re all working very hard to fix them.

He stated that after discussing the matter with Dublin ministers at the funeral, he felt “the ice melting a bit.”

He said, though, that “no one should doubt our resolve to advance the (Northern Ireland) protocol.”

Mr. Foster and Mr. Coveney attended the Service of Reflection for Queen Elizabeth II at St. Anne’s Cathedral in Belfast last month.

The attempt at détente follows last month’s rocky start to the new “special relationship.” Before meeting with Liz Truss in New York, US president Joe Biden delivered a ‘frank’ statement regarding his ‘personal’ sentiments regarding the Northern Ireland Brexit dispute.

The prime minister and president of the United States met for the first time at the UN general assembly.

According to aides, the conversations lasted 75 minutes instead of the allotted hour, and there was a unified front about Ukraine and the response to Russia.

However, it appears that the presidents had an unpleasant conversation regarding Northern Ireland, with US sources calling it as “candid” – euphemism for disagreement.

Mr. Biden reportedly emphasized the “personal priority” he places on resolving the dispute over the province and safeguarding the Good Friday Agreement.

Ms. Truss, for her part, updated the US president on her discussions with EU commission chief Ursula von der Leyen and signaled her desire to resolve the concerns within six months.

The premier aims to have the Northern Ireland Executive functioning again by Easter, the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement.

This might potentially overlap with Mr. Biden’s state visit to the United Kingdom.
