Bills on foreign agents end in fight among parliamentarians

On March 6, 2023, a scuffle broke out between members of the Georgian Parliament during a Committee on Legal Issues meeting, which was convened to consider two bills on foreign agents.

According to Novosti Georgia, Anri Okhanashvili, chairman of the committee from the ruling Georgian Dream party, and Levan Khabeishvili, chairman of the United National Movement, were involved in the scuffle.

The altercation began after Okhanashvili asked several opposition deputies to leave the auditorium.

Furthermore, journalists were not allowed to attend the meeting, and opposition members believe that passing the bills would make it difficult for Georgia to enter the European Union.

During the discussion of the bills, a protest rally against foreign agent bills was taking place outside the parliament building.

The Georgian Parliament initiated discussions on the bills on March 2, and committees have already approved them on defence and international relations.

The first bill, “On Transparency of Foreign Influence,” pertains to media and non-governmental organisations receiving foreign funding.

The second bill, titled “On Registration of Foreign Agents,” pertains to legal entities and individuals.
