METRO POLICE OFFICER ASSAULTED BY DRUNK SUSPECTS

On Thursday, 9 February 2023, a Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) officer was assaulted by two male suspects at the Bara Taxi Rank in Diepkloof, Soweto.

On Thursday, the metro police officer joined environmental health inspectors who were inspecting compliance at establishments at the Bara Taxi rank when the incident occurred.

The officer was accosted by inebriated individuals while the environmental health inspectors were inspecting the establishments. They made an effort to gain his attention. The police ignored them since they were making no sense.

According to the JMPD, when the suspects realised the officer was uninterested in what they were saying, they approached him and began to push him.

In response to his defence, the officer retaliated, and the two suspects began slapping him.

A backup officer was promptly sent to assist the officer. When the backup came, the two inebriated suspects escaped on foot. The cops pursued the suspects and apprehended them on Collinder Road in Soweto.

The two were arrested for assaulting a metro police officer and are being held at Diepkloof police station. They are scheduled to appear in court shortly.

Angie Mokasi, Acting Chief of Police for the JMPD, condemns the senseless assault on the metro police officer.

“It is unacceptable that metro police officers continue to be attacked while carrying out their duties,” Mokasi said.
