Met Office warns part of Wales against snow and ice

The Met Office has issued a snow and ice warning for a large part of Wales. The warning is in place from 9 pm Monday until 10 am Tuesday.

A band of rain is expected to turn to snow overnight on Monday, and this could make the Tuesday morning commute difficult.

The yellow alert warns that the rain will edge southwards through Monday evening and early Tuesday, turning to snow on hills and potentially to lower levels in some areas.

Although many regions will experience little or no snow accumulations, 1 to 2 cm could settle in some spots, most likely over high ground and southern parts of the warning area. As the rain and snow slowly clear southern England on Tuesday, it is expected to turn light and patchy. However, ice is likely to form readily on untreated surfaces as skies clear overnight.

The warning covers a significant number of areas in Wales, including Blaenau Gwent, Bridgend, Caerphilly, Cardiff, Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Merthyr Tydfil, Monmouthshire, Neath Port Talbot, Newport, Pembrokeshire, Powys, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Swansea, Torfaen, and Vale of Glamorgan.

The Met Office has speculated for days that Arctic winds could bring snow to large parts of the UK. The northerly airflow will sweep across the UK at the start of this, and the introduction of an arctic maritime airmass will bring snow showers from Monday, says the Met Office.

Chris Almond, Deputy Chief Meteorologist, has warned that very cold air will spread across the UK from late on Sunday through early next week. This will bring snow even to low levels in the north and east through Monday and Tuesday. He added that in excess of 10cm of snow could accumulate, most likely on high ground in the north, but also settling for a time at lower levels.

BBC Breakfast forecaster Carol Kirkwood has predicted up to 20cm of snow in higher lands in Scotland overnight. Snow is also expected to fall in lower areas of the UK. She added that as the cold front sinks south, it will allow Arctic air to flow south behind it, bringing a lot of wintry showers.

Tuesday is going to be a day for wrapping up warm, with temperatures reaching just 5C in Cardiff, and wind chill making it feel sub-zero in many parts of the country. Tuesday night will feel even colder than Monday night, with widespread frost and a risk of ice.
