Mesa Airlines flight forced to abort landing at last minute to avoid collision

A Mesa Airlines flight was forced to abort its landing at Hollywood Burbank Airport on Wednesday night due to a near miss with a SkyWest plane that had been cleared for takeoff at the same time.

The Mesa Airlines flight, numbered CRJ900, was less than a mile away from the runway when the pilot was forced to pull up. The close call is the latest in a series of similar incidents in recent months at major US airports.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the incident. The FAA reported that there were 1,633 “runway incursions” last year, up from 1,397 in 2012, and just 987 in 2002.

These numbers represent any time an aircraft, vehicle, or person is wrongly located in a protected area during takeoff or landing.
