Onanuga made this appeal in response to a statement issued by the Court of Appeal, refuting claims that a member of the Presidential Election Petitions Court (PEPC) had resigned.

Speaking anonymously to Vanguard, a senior official from the court dismissed the report as fake news, attributing it to malicious rumor-mongers.

The source emphatically stated that neither Justice Boloukuoromo M. Ugo nor any other member of the presidential election tribunal had resigned.

Taking to his verified Twitter account on Thursday, Onanuga expressed concern over the rampant spread of fake news, highlighting its detrimental effect on the nation’s judiciary, all in the name of politics.

The presidential aide urged the police to fulfill their responsibilities and enforce the Cybercrime law, emphasizing the potential destruction that fake news poses to the country.

In his tweet, Onanuga wrote, “We should all be worried by the reckless way some Nigerians are dishing and spreading fake news in the social media, with impunity.

The Appeal Court, the Supreme Court have just debunked two of such malicious false news aimed at destroying our judiciary, all because of politics.

The police should wake up to their duties.

Our country has a Cybercrime law that deals with fake news.

Let the police implement the law or else fake news will destroy our country.”

Bayo Onanuga’s plea sheds light on the urgent need to combat the dissemination of false information on social media platforms.

He emphasizes the recent denials by the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court regarding fabricated news stories, stressing the potential harm that such false narratives can inflict on the judiciary.

Onanuga calls upon law enforcement agencies, particularly the police, to effectively enforce the Cybercrime law in order to safeguard the country from the destructive impact of fake news.
