Max Scherzer strikes out 9 times during a 2-0 loss to Nicaragua

Max Scherzer, pitcher for the New York Mets, recorded nine outs via strikeouts in a 2-0 loss against Team Nicaragua at Clover Park on Wednesday.

Scherzer allowed only one hit, a home run by Cheslor Cuthbert, during his three-plus innings on the mound. Despite stretching out to 68 pitches, the Mets were unable to secure a win.

The Mets struggled offensively, failing to record a hit until there were two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

It was at this point that Ronnie Mauricio reached on an infield single. The team also struggled defensively, committing three errors within the first four innings of the game.

Mark Vientos, playing first base, botched a grounder, and shortstop Luis Guillorme failed to cleanly field what could have been a double-play ball.

In the fourth inning, catcher Francisco Alvarez attempted to throw out a base-stealer at second base but instead threw the ball into center field.

Looking ahead to the next game, Jose Butto, a Venezuela native, is set to start in an exhibition game against Team Venezuela at 1:10 p.m. in Port St. Lucie.
