Massive earthquake hits Syria and Turkey, killing around 1,300 people

More than 1,300 people were killed and scores more were injured when a powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck southeastern Turkey and northern Syria early on Monday. The quake also sparked a desperate hunt for survivors who may have been buried beneath the debris of fallen houses.

The death toll in Turkey, according to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has risen to 912.

The earthquake occurred on a snowy, wet night, just before morning.

It was audible in Cairo, Cyprus, and Lebanon, among other places.

Turkish officials said that there had been at least 20 aftershocks, with one measuring magnitude 6.6.

A area ripped apart by Syria’s civil conflict, which has lasted more than ten years, was shaken by the earthquake.

There are government and opposition troops in the impacted areas of Syria. Millions of war refugees are housed in Turkey.

Numerous countries, notably the United States, Germany, France, Greece, and Ukraine, swiftly offered their support.
