Mason Greenwood of Manchester United appears in court

Mason Greenwood, a football player for Manchester United, appeared in court today after being charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behavior, and assault.

Monday, the England winger appeared in Manchester Magistrates’ Court wearing a grey hoodie and grey sweatpants.

Members of his family and members of the press sat in the public gallery. Two dock policemen surrounded the 21-year-old as he entered the courtroom.

He spoke at the opening of the hearing to confirm his name, date of birth, and address before the court heard the specifics of the charges against him.

District Judge Mark Hadfield deferred the proceedings until later Monday morning, when a decision regarding his release conditions will be made.

The athlete was arrested for the first time in January for alleged sexual misconduct with a young woman after photographs and videos were uploaded online.

Since then, he has been on bail, but he was caught in the Trafford area on Saturday for allegedly violating restrictions.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said shortly after 4 p.m. on Saturday that it had authorized Greater Manchester Police to charge Greenwood.

Janet Potter, deputy chief crown prosecutor for CPS North West, stated, “The Crown Prosecution Service has authorized Greater Manchester Police to prosecute Mason Greenwood, 21, with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behavior, and assault resulting in actual bodily damage.”

“All three counts pertain to the same accuser.”

“Specialist rape prosecutors from CPS North West’s difficult casework team authorized the charges after reviewing Greater Manchester Police’s evidence file,”

According to the allegations, the attempted rape occurred in October 2021.

The controlling and coercive conduct occurred between November 2018 and October of this year, although the assault resulting in actual bodily harm allegation is dated December 2021.

Ms. Potter stated, “The Crown Prosecution Service reminds all parties that criminal proceedings are pending against the defendant and that he is entitled to a fair trial.

It is crucial that there be no online reporting, discussion, or dissemination of anything that could in any way affect the proceedings.

The forward, who has made one appearance for England, was prohibited from playing or training with the Old Trafford club within hours of the allegations appearing online at the start of the year.

Nike suspended and then canceled its sponsorship agreement with Greenwood, and Electronic Arts confirmed his exclusion from active squads in Fifa 22.
