Marriage can lead to longer life for men

According to a new study from the American College of Cardiology, a happy marriage can lead to a longer and healthier life for men. The study found that men who never married are more than twice as likely to die from heart failure within five years of diagnosis compared to married men or women of any marital status.

Researchers analyzed data from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis, which included 6,800 American adults between 45 and 84 years old.

They found that lifelong bachelors were about 2.2 times more likely to die than married men. The study suggested that social interaction, access to someone who can monitor health, or differences in health behaviors such as diet, exercise, or alcohol intake could be possible factors that explain the correlation.

However, further study is needed to determine the exact reasoning behind the relationship. Heart failure affects about 6.2 million adults in the US and is a chronic condition for which there is currently no cure, but there are ways to manage it.

Researchers suggest discussing home life and relationship status with clinicians to determine how it might affect progress with heart failure.
