Man dies after allegedly being set on fire in altercation in rural town, murder charge expected

A man is set to be charged with murder following an incident where another man was allegedly set on fire in Victoria’s north-west.

The victim, aged 69, was taken to the hospital after being injured during an altercation with another man at a property on Wallaby Road in the town of Wheatsheaf, near Daylesford.

He sustained upper body injuries and died overnight. The police arrested a 63-year-old man from Wheatsheaf at the scene and he is expected to face upgraded charges from attempted murder to murder.

He is scheduled to appear before the Ballarat Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

Firefighters were also called to the scene on Tuesday morning to extinguish a blaze in the forest area near where the alleged assault occurred. Police are investigating the incident and have urged anyone with information to come forward.
