Man convicted of sexually assaulting his cousin in 2018 received a 14-month sentence

A man convicted of sexually assaulting his cousin in 2018 received a 14-month sentence from Milwaukee County Judge Janet Protasiewicz, who is running for the Wisconsin Supreme Court.

Despite the victim’s impact statement and the potential for a maximum sentence of 10 years, Protasiewicz opted to give the perpetrator a relatively lenient sentence, along with community service.

During the sentencing hearing, she commented that she did not consider the man a danger to the public.

The victim reported that the assault caused her to suffer from depression, isolation, and multiple breakdowns at school and work.

She also said that the incident negatively affected her relationships, and she could not be intimate with her boyfriend following the assault.

Despite this, Protasiewicz did not characterize the perpetrator as dangerous during the sentencing hearing.

Protasiewicz is running for the Wisconsin Supreme Court against former Justice Daniel Kelly.

The two are leading candidates for the upcoming election to determine whether Republicans maintain their hold on the state’s Supreme Court.

The winner will likely impact the state’s rulings on abortion laws and gerrymandering issues.

Protasiewicz is running as a women’s choice candidate and has previously condemned Wisconsin’s near-total ban on abortion.

She has also criticized the state’s new electoral map as “rigged” and favouring GOP candidates.
