Calls for urgent action to address the growing pothole problem

Calls for urgent action to address the growing pothole problem that is causing harm and costing drivers millions of pounds have been made by motoring groups and MPs.

The AA has reported that so far this year, damaged roads have caused 73,000 breakdowns – an average of 1,400 a day, while the RAC has estimated that repairing potholes cost drivers more than £130 million annually.

The charity Cycling UK’s analysis of government data revealed that in 2021, three cyclists were killed, and dozens were injured when they collided with potholes.

Campaigners are urging authorities to redirect more funds raised from taxing motorists towards repairing damaged roads.

Last year, the Asphalt Industry Alliance published research suggesting that it would take nine years to clear the backlog of potholes.

Councils claim that funds for repairing roads are dwindling, and local authorities are responsible for repairs on all roads other than motorways and major A-roads.
