The 77-year-old actress who played the British monarch on stage and in movies said that she was “happy to be an Elizabethan” and called Her Majesty’s the “epitome of nobility.”

Following the British monarch’s passing on Thursday at the death of 96 at her Balmoral residence, Oscar-winning Dame Helen said on Instagram: “I am happy to be an Elizabethan. We mourn a lady who embodied nobility in every way, crown or no crown.

In addition to portraying the monarch in the 2006 film “The Queen,” the actress dressed as Queen Elizabeth I to perform in front of Elizabeth II to commemorate her record-breaking 70 years as monarch at the Platinum Jubilee.

She paid tribute as the 74-year-old composer Andrew Lloyd Webber was seen Thursday among mourners carrying flowers to leave at the Buckingham Palace gates.

The Queen has been the steady anchor of not only Britain and her beloved Commonwealth, but an inspiration to the world for her lifetime of service, throughout the whole of my life, said the monarch on behalf of himself and his third wife Madeleine Gurdon in a tweet.

This news truly saddens Madeleine and me, and our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Her Majesty The Queen,” they said.
