Lightning kills two jet skiers in Puerto Rico

Police said on Monday that two passengers on jet skis were killed by lightning in the waters off the southern coast of Puerto Rico. Authorities reported that a 36-year-old male operating a jet ski was struck by lightning first, followed by a 26-year-old lady who was a passenger on a nearby jet ski.

The operator of the second jet ski remained unharmed.

According to the police, the guy died instantly, while the woman died shortly after being carried ashore.

The fatalities occurred late Sunday afternoon as Tropical Storm Earl churned northeast of the island and occasionally dumped heavy rain.

According to the National Lighting Safety Council, the last lightning-related fatality in Puerto Rico occurred on September 5, 2017, nearly five years ago.

According to the organization, two more persons have been killed by lightning on the island since 2006.
