Legal expert Mpumelelo Zikalala suggests that if Presiding Judge Tshifhiwa Maumela is replaced in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial, witnesses who have previously testified may be called back for further questioning.
The trial, originally scheduled to take place at the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria from Monday to Thursday, 15 June, was postponed due to Maumela’s illness and his unavailability for an extended period.
The question arises whether a new judge will be appointed to oversee the Senzo Meyiwa trial.
Gauteng Deputy Judge President Aubrey Ledwaba has stated that Maumela’s health issues will prevent him from presiding over the trial for an extended period.

In an interview with eNCA, Zikalala explains that if a new judge is assigned to the case, it is possible that the four witnesses who have already testified, namely police Sergeants Thabo Mosia and Patrick Mthethwa, as well as Meyiwa’s friends Tumelo Madlala and Mthokozisi Thwala, may be summoned to provide further evidence.
The murder of Senzo Meyiwa took place on 26 October 2014 at the residence of his then-girlfriend Kelly Khumalo in Vosloorus, Gauteng.
Meyiwa’s close friends, Mthokozisi Thwala and Tumelo Madlala, as well as Longwe Twala, singer Kelly Khumalo, Khumalo’s mother Ntombi Gladness Khumalo, her sister Zandie Khumalo, and her two children Christian and Thingo, were present when the tragic incident occurred.
In a separate development, the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) recommended the suspension of two judges, Judge Tshifhiwa Maumela and Judge Nomonde Mngqibisa-Thusi, based on complaints filed by Judge President Dunstan Mlambo.
The complaints allege that the judges failed to deliver their judgments in a timely manner.
However, not all members of the JSC committee supported the recommendation for suspension.
