The government of Lagos State, under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has taken action to address the escalating traffic situation around fuel stations.
Officials from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASEMA) have been deployed to manage the growing queues and congestion across the state.
Fuel Subsidy Removal Triggers Queue Buildup
President Bola Tinubu’s announcement of fuel subsidy removal during his inaugural speech on May 29, 2023, at Eagles Square in Abuja, has led to the resurgence of long queues at fuel stations in major cities.
As a result, many motorists have resorted to buying fuel at inflated prices, leading to gridlock on major roads.
Cautioning Motorists to Avoid Traffic Congestion
In a statement released by LASEMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, motorists queuing up for fuel at various filling stations were urged not to cause traffic congestion or disrupt the flow of other road users.
The statement emphasized the need for responsible behavior to alleviate the impact on traffic.
LASTMA’s Response and Advisory
Bolaji Oreagba, the General Manager of LASTMA, explained the necessity of the deployment of officials due to reports of long queues and indiscriminate parking by motorists at filling stations.
He stressed that purchasing fuel should not be an excuse to block roads or impede traffic flow throughout the state.
Oreagba called for cooperation from both landlords and tenants to refrain from storing fuel inappropriately at homes and public places.
Ensuring Safety Measures at Filling Stations
LASTMA also issued a warning to filling stations, urging them to refrain from dispensing fuel in polythene bags, as it can lead to potential fire incidents.
Safety precautions were emphasized to avoid any unnecessary scuffles or hazards related to fuel handling.
