Shea Sanna, the lead attorney in a high-profile child molestation case involving a trans woman, Hannah Tubbs, has been suspended for five days by the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office. Sanna believes that he is being unfairly disciplined for publicly criticizing the district attorney’s decision to try Tubbs as a juvenile.
The suspended attorney believes that his employment record shows no disciplinary action over the course of five years and that the district attorney’s office is creating a paper trail to terminate him.
Tubbs, who was 17 at the time of the crime, was charged as a juvenile and may end up in a female juvenile detention center because she began identifying as a female after the arrest. Sanna opposed this decision, stating that he did not want a male sexual offender going into a female juvenile facility.
Sanna was also suspended on allegations that he “misgendered” Tubbs in a Zoom meeting, although he claims he did not speak during the meeting, and for referring to Tubbs by his birth name, James, in a tweet, which the district attorney’s office called “dead-naming.”
Sanna believes that the suspension is the beginning of a campaign against him by the district attorney’s office. He plans to go public with what is being done and is willing to take legal action if necessary. Sanna says that the prosecution’s attempt to silence him and other attorneys violates their duty to the people they represent. Despite feeling awkward about his return, Sanna loves his job and is willing to continue serving the people of Los Angeles County.
