According to Prince Harry’s new memoir “Spare,” King Charles was envious of Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton because they took the spotlight away from him.
In reference to his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, Harry claims that his jealous father “experienced that before and he had no interest in letting it happen to him again.”
Additionally, Charles inquired about Markle’s career and plans to continue acting before Harry and Markle became engaged. In Harry’s opinion, not at all.
Charles allegedly replied, “Well, my dear son, you already know that we don’t have money to spare.”
Charles provided the couple with financial support while they were living and working as royals in the UK, but when Harry and Meghan moved to the US, Charles shut off the financial support, claiming there wasn’t enough money for the couple. This is despite the fact that the older royal was making “millions” from the “tremendously lucrative” Duchy of Cornwall, a private, income-generating estate designed to support the heir to the throne.
According to reports, “Spare” also explores Charles’ envy of William and Kate’s popularity.
According to a translated excerpt in the Telegraph, Harry claims in the book that “Willy did everything he [Charles] wanted, and sometimes he didn’t want him to do much, because my dad and Camilla didn’t like Willy and Kate getting too much publicity.”
According to Harry, the King’s staff once took precautions to prevent William from being photographed while holding a tennis racket during a public event because “that kind of photo would have pushed Dad and Camilla off every front page.”
Harry continued, “And that couldn’t be tolerated under any circumstances.”
