As he was about to sign the historic Proclamation, the King hastily motioned for an assistant to remove the pen’s box from his desk, which viewers described as’much too small’ for the enormous paper and stationery.
Despite the gravity of the event, observers could not help but find the King’s apparent trouble with the pen to be humorous.
